How to Calculate Your GPA (Grade Point Average)
GPA (Grade Point Average) is a standardized way of measuring academic achievement. Most US universities use a 4.0 scale, though some use 5.0 (weighted) for AP/honors courses.
GPA Scale
A/A+ = 4.0, A- = 3.7, B+ = 3.3, B = 3.0, B- = 2.7, C+ = 2.3, C = 2.0, C- = 1.7, D+ = 1.3, D = 1.0, F = 0.0. For weighted GPA, AP courses add 1.0 and Honors add 0.5.
Calculating Semester GPA
1) Convert each letter grade to its point value. 2) Multiply each grade point by the course's credit hours. 3) Sum all the quality points. 4) Divide by total credit hours. Example: A (4.0) × 3 credits + B+ (3.3) × 4 credits = 12 + 13.2 = 25.2. GPA = 25.2 / 7 = 3.6.
Cumulative GPA
Your cumulative GPA includes all semesters. Add up all quality points from every semester and divide by total credit hours taken across all semesters.
Improving Your GPA
1) Take fewer courses and focus on doing well. 2) Retake courses you got low grades in (if your school allows grade replacement). 3) Use tutoring and office hours. 4) Strategic course selection — balance hard and easy courses. 5) Summer courses often have smaller class sizes.
