Your GPA is one of the most important numbers in your academic career.
The 4.0 Scale
A=4.0, A-=3.7, B+=3.3, B=3.0, B-=2.7, C+=2.3, C=2.0, D=1.0, F=0.0.
How to Calculate
Multiply each grade's point value by credit hours. Sum all quality points. Divide by total credits. Example: Math (4 cr, A=4.0)=16 + English (3 cr, B+=3.3)=9.9 + Physics (4 cr, B=3.0)=12 + History (3 cr, A-=3.7)=11.1. Total: 49/14 = 3.50 GPA. Use our [GPA Calculator](/calculators/gpa-calculator).
Weighted vs Unweighted
Weighted GPA gives extra points for AP/honors courses (5.0 scale). An A in AP = 5.0 vs 4.0 in regular.
Strategies to Improve
1. Prioritize high-credit courses. 2. Retake failed courses. 3. Balance hard courses with manageable electives. 4. Seek help early — office hours and tutoring. 5. Use our calculator to plan what grades you need.
